Day of Job Shadowing

Hilton Columbus at Easton, United States

Goal

Hilton Columbus at Easton’s Day of Job Shadowing initiative focuses on exposing people to careers in the hospitality industry by providing hands-on experience in hotel operations.

Background

More than 140 secondary school students join Team Members each year at Hilton Columbus at Easton (United States) to participate in a day of job shadowing and introduction to the hospitality industry. The day begins with students completing an employment application and partaking in a mock interview where they learn basic expectations, such as dressing professionally, working in teams and providing stellar customer service. Students gain hands-on experience during an orientation, tour of the property and rotation through multiple hotel departments including Front Desk and Housekeeping. During department rotations students perform basic tasks such as making beds and helping guests during check-in.

Target Population

Day of Job Shadowing supports workforce exposure and practical experience for secondary school students.

External Partners

For the last two years, Hilton Columbus at Easton has collaborated with Columbus City Schools such as Columbus Mifflin High to help expose students to careers in hospitality and acquire hands-on experience. Columbus City High Schools help identify men and women who would benefit from the programme based on their interests and coursework. Team Members also work with local collages including Bradford Culinary School, Ohio State University and Ohio University to host collegiate level internships providing hands-on experience and workforce placement. In support of these efforts, Hilton Columbus at Easton’s General Manager, Alan Howe, frequently serves as a guest lecturer at these institutions.

Preparing Our Future

Hilton Mexico City Reforma, Mexico

Goal

Preparing our Future is an intern programme that provides students with the opportunity to receive hands-on training and exposure to the workforce as well as permanent employment opportunities. It also serves as a Team Member recruitment and retention programme for the property.

Background

Each year, more than 100 students participate in Hilton Mexico City Reforma’s (Mexico), Preparing Our Future programme — receiving an individually tailored, hands-on training from department managers and directors. The three-to-six month internship programme begins with a group orientation in which students tour the hotel to identify what department they are interested in supporting. There are about 30 students at a time supporting various departments such as Front Desk, Housekeeping, Engineering and Food and Beverage. Throughout the programme students are able to acquire valuable work experience and engage in daily hotel operations relevant to their department or area of focus. Preparing Our Future serves as a major recruitment bank for Hilton Mexico City Reforma, which hires an average of 10 students from the programme each year.

Target Population

Preparing Our Future recruits 30 college-level students each semester studying or interested in pursuing a career in the hospitality industry.

External Partners

Team Members at the Hilton Mexico City Reforma have partnered with local universities and technical schools to help identify programme participants. The property hosts semester visits in which universities and potential recruits tour the hotel to learn more about Preparing Our Future.
